The Tata’s new subcompact SUV: Tata Nexon, is geared up for the tough competition in sub 4-meter SUV segment.
With the SUV air in the country, Tata picked the right spot by introducing their first subcompact SUV Tata Nexon for the Indian market.
There has been a sudden increase in compact SUVs sales in India since the launch of Renault Duster. Meanwhile the other carmakers were already eyeing that spot. Since then the compact SUV market has seen a boost thanks to the cars like Hyundai Creta, Ford Ecosport, Nissan Terrano and Maruti Vitara Brezza. For such a stiff competition Tata Nexon has to be a class apart inorder to survive in this segment.
Lets find out how well Tata Nexon fits in this bracket.
The Tata Nexon is just the replica of what Tata promised at the last AutoExpo. It is commendable that Tata created the exact concept which they showed in the AutoExpo.
Measuring just under 4 meters, the Tata Nexon stands tall with a ground clearance of 200mm. The Tata Nexon is styled aggressively to compete with the other good looking cars of its segment.
Tata Nexon is an eye catcher for sure.
The front looks bold and strong with a nice heavy grill and high mounted LED headlamps. The eye-catching thing in the Tata Nexon is the white material, which is used to garnish the front, side and rear end of the car, looks catchy. Also, this white material can resist dust and thus has been used so aggressively in the car.
From the side, Tata Nexon has a coupe like roofline which makes it look sporty. The new C-pillar design enhances the beauty. It has a bit muscular stance which makes it look aggressive and bold.
From the rear end, the Tata Nexon looks raised. It has a unique rear design with nice and beautiful split LED tail lamps and eye catching white garnish in the middle.
Tata Nexon surely has a standout design .
The Tata Nexon looks premium from inside. The quality of plastics used is good with nice combination of ebony black and grey colours. The ebony black colour on the centre console makes the interior more appealing. A little garnishing with the good looking chrome all over the place beautifies the interior.
The centre console area reminds us of the Mercedes with a nice responsive 6.5” touchscreen system at the top. The terrific harman music system is a plus point which makes the Tata Nexon’s music system sounds better than that of its rivals.
The Tata Nexon is rich in storage spaces, have plenty of smart storage spaces which increases its practicality. Also the door pads even have a space for umbrella.
The Tata Nexon feels a lot premium from inside and the rich interior makes you feel that you are sitting in a far more expensive car than this.
The seats are comfortable with just the right bit of cushioning. Even after a long journey the driver would feel much relaxed.
On the back, we have plenty of legroom though the width is a bit small and the third person might feel a bit cramped.
The seats are comfy and has a sufficient amount of headroom. Just the window line is a bit high which can generate a claustrophobic feeling for some passengers.
Tata Nexon has got a sufficient boot space of 350 L.

The driving position and visibility of Tata Nexon is good. One sits high thus, you get a complete SUV feeling. The diesel Tata Nexon comes with the 1.5L Direct injection turbo engine which puts out a healthy power of 110HP and 260Nm of torque.
The engine is pretty refined, smooth and linear. No need to work the gears much.
But, that typical diesel punch is lacking in the Tata Nexon. Acceleration is pretty linear as well which makes it not that exciting to drive. If one likes to rev much and need a responsive fast car then Tata Nexon would disappoint you. The car is unable to impart enough power, may be due to its heavy weight and it is a 100 kg heavier than its rival Maruti Vitara Brezza.
The Tata Nexon is equipped with the three drive modes, which is first in class.
- In the economy mode, the car feels dull, very slow to respond, you don’t get much power although one cant complain as you tend to saving a few bucks in driving in the economy mode.
- The city mode of the Tata Nexon also performs below par, the car lags in city mode as well.
- The sports mode is the mode you want to be in. More responsive, more exciting, more fun to drive.
The petrol Tata Nexon comes with the 3-cylinder, 1.2L turbo petrol engine. It generates an enormous 110HP & 170Nm of torque thanks to the turbo engine.
It also has an edge over its rivals with a six-speed manual gearbox.
The petrol engine of Tata Nexon is nice and refined. Surprisingly the Tata Nexon has a silent drive despite of its 3-cylinder engine which is usually expected to be loud. The petrol version also has the same three driving modes and the difference between the three modes is distinguishable. The performance lacks a punch. The sports mode is the best mode in which one can enjoy the drive.
Tata Nexon is bold and beautiful with its unique design that sets it apart form its rivals. The interior feels premium, the car offers plenty of features and just the right amount of luxury as one desires. With sufficient space and practically designed cabin the Tata Nexon is just a right family car one wishes for. Although it is not that exciting to drive as its rivals are, so if one is looking for a car with performance then Tata Nexon might not be your choice. But, surely this new upcoming car has the capability to become one of the popular cars in India.
